Acupuncture is increasingly becoming an accepted fertility protocol in the modern world. Our office specializes in acupuncture treatment of infertility in women. We will work together with your obstetrician/ reproductive medicine specialist in order to achieve best results.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and infertility treatment

Acupuncture and herbal medicine have been used for centuries to treat some causes for infertility such as under-functioning (hypothyroidism) or over-functioning (hyperthyroidism). For example, acupuncture and herbs would not help for tubal adhesions which can occur as a result of pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis, but they can improve the ovarian and follicular function. In addition, acupuncture can increase blood flow to the endometrium, helping to develop a thick, rich lining.

Who can benefit from acupuncture
Acupuncture is not contraindicated for anyone regardless of their pathology or the medications they are taking. It can be used to treat any type of fertility disorder including spasmed tubes (blocked tubes, though, will not respond to acupuncture). Acupuncture combined with herbs can treat elevated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained (idiopathic) infertility, luteal phase defect, hyperprolactinemia (when not caused by a prolactinoma), and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with annovulatory cycles.    Infertility

Acupuncture is not a panacea for all fertility problems. It cannot help if structural defects exist (blocked fallopian tube, fibroid tumor).

Younger women in their early/mid-30s may consider acupuncture treatment first, before investing in expensive invasive fertility treatment. In some cases a few months in acupuncture treatment will be enough to get pregnant.

For women approaching the age of 40, specialists recommend a fertility workup before applying acupuncture.

Acupuncture treatment period
Patients are usually treated for three to four months before an insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF), or donor-egg transfer. Since most miscarriages occur within the first three months of pregnancy, treatment often lasts through week twelve to help prevent miscarriage. Most effective fertility treatment can be achieved by a combination of acupuncture, herbs and traditional medical interventions. However, in many cases conceptions may occur by applying only acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Although the risk of using acupuncture for fertility treatment is minimal, a miscarriage may occur if incorrect acupuncture points or herbs are used when a woman is pregnant. Therefore, it is very important that acupuncture fertility treatment is carried out by an experienced, board-certified acupuncture physician with substantial knowledge in fertility disorders.

Look for a physician who is adequately trained in acupuncture and has a background in infertility treatment. An MD who has passed a crash course in acupuncture and practice it once in a while, cannot be compared with an experienced TCM physician with thousand of hours of training and daily practice. You can verify credentials of the acupuncturists in your area via the enclosed link to the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

It is an advantage if your acupuncture physician is associated with a reputable medical center.

Make sure that your obstetrician/ reproductive medicine specialist and your acupuncturist coordinate their treatments.

It is important to get your pregnancy verified by an obstetrician as soon as possible and inform your acupuncturist on that, so s/he can adjust accordingly your treatment.
